Course: Modern History
Overview:
The study of Modern History engages students in an investigation of the forces that have shaped the world, based on the analysis and interpretation of sources. It offers students the opportunity to investigate the possible motivations and actions of individuals and groups, and how they have shaped the world politically, culturally, economically and socially. Modern History stimulates students’ curiosity and imagination, and enriches their appreciation of humanity by introducing them to a range of historical developments and experiences that have defined the modern world.
The Year 11 course provides students with opportunities to develop and apply their understanding of methods and issues involved in the investigation of modern history. Students have the opportunity to engage in the study of a range of people, ideas, movements, events and developments that have shaped the modern world.
The Year 12 course provides students with opportunities to apply their understanding of sources and relevant issues in the investigation of the modern world. Through a core study, students investigate the nature of power and authority from 1919 to 1946. They also study key features in the history of one nation, one study in peace and conflict, and one study of change in the modern world.
Topics:
Preliminary Course
1. Investigating Modern History
Students undertake at least ONE option from ‘The Nature of Modern History’, and at least TWO case studies.
2. Historical Investigation
3. The Shaping of the Modern World
At least ONE study from ‘The Shaping of the Modern World’ is to be undertaken.
Historical concepts and skills are integrated with the studies undertaken in Year 11.

HSC Examination Format:
The examination will consist of a written paper worth 100 marks.
The time allowed is 3 hours plus 5 minutes reading time.
Questions may include sources and/or interpretations.
Section I – Core: Power and Authority in the Modern World 1919–1946 (25 marks)
● There will be three or four questions.
● This section will require candidates to analyse and interpret sources and apply their own knowledge.
● One question will be worth 10 to 15 marks.
Section II – National Studies (25 marks)
● Candidates will be required to answer one extended response on the topic they have studied.
● The expected length of response will be around eight pages of an examination writing booklet (approximately 1000 words).
Section III – Peace and Conflict (25 marks)
● Candidates will be required to answer one extended response on the topic they have studied.
● The expected length of response will be around eight pages of an examination writing booklet (approximately 1000 words).
Section IV – Change in the Modern World (25 marks)
● There will be one question with three or four parts for each of the six topics.
● One part will be worth 10 to 15 marks.
